"Everybody needs someone who will fight for you when you're too dumb, or too weak, or too scared to fight for yourself. Someone who will continuously be the mirror to remind you of who you really are." Jonathan will share his incredible experiences creating the "village" who fought for him and helped him overcome the odds that were against him from the start.
Students who attend will be eligible to win a book for themselves and for their school's library.
Throughout his heartwarming memoir, Jonathan Conyers introduces us to the unique and diverse cast of characters who made up Jonathan's village and helped him change the trajectory of his life. Born into a family crippled by addiction and homelessness, Jonathan "failed" kindergarten and was told he would never succeed academically. Instead, Jonathan found ways to defy the limited expectations placed upon him by building a village to save his own life, and realize his dream to get into medical school. Meet the teachers, his debate coach, drug dealers, and a boy named Diego who changed his life.
Jonathan will be signing books after the talk.
Join us as we help get these books into the hands of the students and teachers who would benefit from Jonathan's message. We are collecting contributions to purchase I Wasn't Supposed To Be Here to donate to libraries. Help us get the books into libraries in underserved neighborhoods where his message could have great impact. We will also be donating books to our partner organizations who have generously supported bringing this talk to our communities. A drawing will be held at the talk so students have a chance to win a book for themselves and their schools.
Your kind contribution will be recognized at the talk.
